Sheep Pen Peak

Sheep Pen Peak el 10850' is the northernmost 10000 foot summit in the Lost River Range. Of the 29 or so 10'ers spread out along Idaho's highest mountain range, this one, it is believed, was the last of the bunch to be climbed.

This view north to Sheep Pen Peak is from the east ridge of Grouse Creek Mountain and looks across the chasm of Sheep Pen Basin. I had to climb over Grouse Creek Mountain to get to Sheep Pen Peak.

View N to Sheep Pen Peak from part way along the Sheep Pen/ Grouse connecting ridge. The bright iron red soil is a contact point between Challis Volcanics and Paleozoic limestone. Also, note the 'bathtub rings' on the precipitous headwall. This was caused by the sapping effect of glacial ice. During Pleistocene time the ice filling Sheep Pen Basin could have been up to 1000 feet thick.
